Cape Epic 2015 set to thrill with star-studded line-up

SANDTON - A string of former Springbok greats will be taking on the ABSA Cape Epic Mountain Bike race.

John Smit, Butch James, Robbie Kempson and Joel Stransky will be among more than 1 000 cyclists to test their endurance on the eight-day 739km route in the Western Cape.

Race founder, Kevin Vermaak expressed excitement at a media briefing ahead of the gruelling challenge taking place from 15 to 22 March.

“This year’s Cape Epic is set to be super competitive with a star-studded line-up from all over the world,” he said.

Vermaak said one of the biggest drawcards would be the women’s category which would feature some of the best woman mountain bikers.

He expressed hope that a local team would take honours this year. “We’ve never had an all-South African team win the Cape Epic but I’m hoping this year we’ll take it.”

Speaking to the media, former Springbok captain, Smit said,”Taking part in the race is an incredible feeling and I can’t wait to do it again, and with someone who takes the challenge seriously.” Smit will partner with good friend, Shane Chorley for the second time.
