Premier league holds safety and security workshops

JOBURG - Safety and security experts will gather at various workshops across the country to discuss ways of improving safety standards at domestic football matches.

The workshops will be organised by the Premier Soccer League and will take place at various venues around the country in the next two weeks. The workshops will seek, among other things, to assist club security officers, event organisers and other role players to be better equipped in dealing with all safety components at matches.

The first workshop was held at the league’s offices in Parktown on 13 January. This will be followed by another workshop two days later in Durban (15 January at 10am at the Southern Sun Elangeni), while other workshops will be held in Polokwane (19 January at 10am at the Garden Court) Cape Town (21 January at 10am at the Southern Sun Cullinan) and Bloemfontein (23 January at 10am at the Southern Sun Nelson Mandela).

The workshops will aim at establishing a standardised operational approach in planning and managing of all premiership and National First Division league matches. The discussions will also seek to narrow the operational gap between the league, the police, disaster management, the clubs and any other security role players on issues of security at matches.

“Safety and security is one of the most important elements of any event,” said the league’s general manager for safety and security, Phillip Masimong.

“As the league, we have been doing a lot of introspection on how we can improve on safety and security at our stadiums.”
