Empowering women through sport

SANDTON - Hogan Lovells, an international legal practice, has joined Coaching for Hope, an innovative development programme, to launch a booklet aimed at delivering awareness about the rights of women in sport.

The programme is under Skillshare International, an international volunteering and development organisation.

Coaching for Hope uses soccer to create better futures for young people in Western and Southern Africa.

The launch took place at the Hogan Lovells offices in Sandton and Norman Brook of Skillshare International was the master of ceremonies.

Various guests were invited to attend including some Banyana Banyana team members and their coach, Vera Pauw.

The Banyana players attended on behalf of their team-mate, Amanda Dlamini, who was unable to attend the launch.

Dlamini had spearheaded the Coaching for Hope booklet initiative, and was honoured at the launch for all her efforts towards it.

The booklet is called Freedom Games, and is for young women and girls in South Africa aimed at educating them about their right to play and enjoy sport.

“The booklet aims to highlight that football is not only for men but for women as well,” said Brook.

The programme offers girls from townships and areas of high unemployment in South Africa the tools to deal confidently with the challenges they face in their everyday lives.

The organisation taps into the global passion for soccer, using professional coaches to train local youth workers to coach soccer, and to deliver awareness about important issues and life skills to young people in their communities.
