Show jumper represents SA

JOBURG - Show stopper Cara Frew from Sandton will be show jumping at the World Equestrian Games taking place in Caen, France.

Frew (22) took part in the Idols SA competition last year and she has produced music with South African acts Locnville and rapper, Da Les. “When I am not singing I am riding,” said Frew. “I have been riding all my life.” She said she is following in her mom’s footsteps who was also a horse rider. Frew started riding professionally when she was only seven years old.

She also took part in gymnastics as a youngster and decided to combine gymnastics with horse riding in a sport called vaulting, gymnastics and dance on horseback. “When I do something I do it fully,” she said.

Frew then later decided to focus on show jumping, a competitive sport of riding horses over a course of fences and other obstacles in an arena. She trained oversees and built a relationship with riding.

At the age of 18 she competed at the 2010 World Equestrian Games and for this year’s games she will be competing with the same horse she competed with in 2010. “His name is Leopold Pierreville but I just call him Leo,” said Frew. “He is a 15-year-old old grey gelding by Adelfos and I’ve had him since I was 15.”

Frew said Leo is very special to her as they have both learnt everything they know about riding together. “He was a young horse with no experience when I got him and I was a rider with little experience other than being South Africa’s junior champion,” explained Frew. “We have a very good relationship, he trusts me and I trust him. It takes a very special partnership to get to the top, some people only have one in their lifetime and Leo is my one.”

She said she feels lucky to have the support system that she has. “As well as an exceptional trainer who also happens to be a top rider, without either of these components I would never have gotten as far as I’ve come.”
