Sindisiwe Kubeka of Varsity College Sandton said Martin was a pivotal member in Central Gauteng Golf Union’s victory against South African Golf Association Juniors at a tournament played at Cullinan Golf Club.
She added that the Central Gauteng team finished with a 6.5 – 5.5 victory after fellow team member Basil Wright produced the winning shot in the final game. “Though the victory is an ensemble effort, team manager Andy Truluck hailed Martin for an outstanding performance on the course,” said Kubeka. Truluck said Martin was two down with three to play, but he battled back to halve the match against Gregory McKay and evened the score at 5.5 all.
Kubeka said 19-year-old Martin was an avid golfer and his work towards honing his golf skills at Varsity College’s Golf Academy paid off during the tournament. “Shane’s golf has improved this year with all his hard work,” said Gavan Levenson, head coach of the Varsity College Golf Academy. “I think this is just the start of big things for this young man and I am proud of him.”
Justin Pemberton, manager of the academy also commended Martin’s hard work. Pemberton said, “This is a great achievement for Shane. He has worked hard over the last year and a half with his coach, Gavan Levenson and the results are finally coming. We are extremely proud of him as he is excelling in his golf as well as his academics.”
The academy is based at the Sandton campus and is dedicated to giving talented young golfers the opportunity to pursue their golfing dream of playing competitively, while still studying towards a recognised tertiary qualification.
Kubeka said each year academy students were afforded an opportunity to participate in a range of regional and national tournaments, with top players standing a chance to represent Varsity College at the national inter-university golf tournament.
