Wanderers stumble against determined Wits

ILLOVO - After the exertions of the Dainfern Cup Challenge, the Wanderers Rugby Club welcomed Wits University to Kent Park in Illovo.

First to play was the U21s, who were well-beaten 10-38 by the visitors. Lock Mike Badibang scored their only try while wing Khany Somdyala converted it together with slotting a penalty kick.

Next was the third XV who also suffered defeat against Wits, going down 10-24. Flanker Duncan Sharp ran in a try created by good running from the backline players, while scrumhalf Grant Wilcox converted it along with a penalty. Lock George Mtemerewa was made man-of-the-match.

After that was the U19 team who went through a baptism of fire in their 12-66 hiding. Mfanelo Khosa scored two tries, one of which was converted by Siyabulela Somdyali.

The second XV were also soundly beaten, losing 11-42. Flanker Micheal Groom scored an unconverted try, while fullback Nick Gerber chipped in with two penalty kicks.

The first XV could not stem the tide as a rampant Wits beat them 16-37. Try scorers were scrumhalf Wesley Flanagan and lock Richard Hayes. Fly half Craig Kollerick was succesful with two penalties before leaving the field injured.
The club has since enjoyed a bye within their schedule, and are set to travel to Randfontein for the last encounter of the first round of season matches. The Wanderers thirds are also pencilled in to take on a Maccabi side in a friendly fixture before the side travels to Israel.
