Speed bumps make for civilised driving

Shaun Smith writes:

We had taxis in Parkmore and Hurlingham speeding on the side roads at more than 100km/h.

Switzerland, which has the lowest percentage of road accidents, have added speed bumps and multiple traffic circles that you cannot avoid, and you must slow down to 50km/h to go through them.

Multiple speed bumps have been introduced in cities in Singapore, and parts of Dallas, and all the research shows that there are less traffic jams as the cars drive at a uniform speed, matching traffic lights.

Children were killed in the streets of Soweto by speeding cars. The community, knowing full well the inefficiencies of the Johannesburg Roads Agency, constructed speed bumps at their own expense.

Now cars are travelling at a respectable speed, no bumper to bumper traffic and guess what? – there’s not a single accident or death.

The roads agency should research countries that have low road deaths before coming out with rubbish information about the disadvantages associated with speed bumps.
