The opening of Sandton Junior school is a victory for parents and children

Ivan Ka-Mbonane, a concerned parent, writes: I refer to an article published in the Sandton Chronicle titled 'School vanishes' week ending 4 February 2014.

It also appears that another article was published by the Randburg Sun, titled ‘Sandton Junior School takes over’.

The central feature of both articles was that parents who enrolled their children at Ashfield Preparatory School were very surprised to find out that the school name and ownership had changed.

It is within parents’ rights to be surprised when events such as these unfold, as this issue involves the preparatory aspects of children, which is very fundamental for early development and for creating an egalitarian society envisaged by our Constitution.

What is comforting and encouraging is that this school has been taken over by a highly-experienced teacher with over 17 years of teaching and management experience, Nadia Katz.

I have engaged Katz and also sought advice on various aspects of childhood development, as my two sons attend a day care centre owned and managed by her, called Smiley Kids Sandton.

I can confirm as a parent that all schools managed by Katz are highly reputable and run in a professional manner. The success of any institution lies in the manner in which it is managed and by the wealth of experience available within the institution.

The name change may be concerning to parents, in light of the fact that they were not consulted regarding the name and ownership change. However, it appears that the preparatory and developmental standards offered by Katz’s school are not, in any way whatsoever, impaired.

As a parent, I am also pleased by the manner in which Katz reacted to the situation, particularly in opening doors to affected children and in engaging with affected parents in a mature and caring manner. This is apparent in the fact that Katz is willing to waive registration fees for affected children.

It is in this regard that I call upon parents whose children are affected to openly engage with her, as she would certainly assist, without compromising the well-being of the children concerned.

It may [also] be a great idea to visit the school on the 31 February to witness the exciting open day and also seek more information about its vision of the school.
