A note to taxi drivers in Fourways: here is a refresher for the traffic rules that have perhaps been forgotten.
- The white line before pedestrian crossings is where you need to stop – same goes for traffic lights.
- The no U-turn sign attached to traffic lights actually means ‘no U-turn allowed’.
- A solid white line in the middle of the road means you cannot cross it to do a U-turn, rather use the next safe area to turn around.
- Yellow lines on the side of the road mean you are not allowed to stop there.
- Red lines on the side of the road mean the same thing.
- Red traffic lights mean stop until it changes green, not until you feel you have waited long enough and then just drive.
- Orange traffic lights mean slow down to stop.
- The roads are not a dustbin, please dispose of rubbish in a refuse bin at your next stop.
- Passengers are your responsibility, please have a refuse bag in the taxi for all rubbish so it doesn’t fly out the window.
- The right and left turn arrows painted on the road mean you need to turn either right or left and not cut into the traffic going straight.
- You cannot stop in the middle of a busy road like William Nicol Drive or Mulbarton Road and decide you need to pick up passengers.
- The traffic island between Montecasino Boulevard and Leslie Avenue is not a new taxi lane – you are destroying the grass.
- The traffic island going left into Fourways Boulevard is not a new taxi rank.
- When approaching a traffic circle give way to the right and yield accordingly.
- You need to behave at all times – not only when Metro police are around.
- If you want to be respected then you need to respect the rules of the road, and in turn, other road users will respect you
