The IIE’s Varsity College Sandton students celebrate Heritage Day in style

With students from all walks of life coming together to celebrate their heritage, this year’s Student Heritage Festival was a true reflection of cultural unity, joy, and excitement.

The IIE’s Varsity College Sandton Campus recently hosted its annual student heritage festival, a vibrant celebration of the rich diversity found within its student body.

Organised by the student experience team, which includes the social committee, sports committee, career centre, VC cares, and VC voice, the event gave students a chance to showcase and take pride in their unique cultures and traditions.

The festival was alive with energy as students set up display tables representing various cultures and countries, complete with ornaments, fun facts, and foods associated with each culture.

Students were encouraged to walk around, sample the diverse cuisines, and learn about different traditions.

The event was not just about food and facts, though, music filled the air as students enjoyed an hour of cultural entertainment, followed by a fashion show where participants modelled traditional clothing, highlighting the beauty of cultural attire.

One of the most exciting parts of the day was the display table competition, which brought a competitive yet collaborative spirit to the event.

Lehlogonolo Skosana, a third-year student studying the IIE’s Diploma in Sports Development and Management, with the sports committee, walked away with the top prize for their captivating presentation.

“Winning the best display table at this year’s heritage festival was more than just a victory for me and my team, it was a testament to the power of unity and cultural expression,” said Skosana.

Skosana added that they brought the vibrant spirit of Kasi to the forefront by showcasing their unique lifestyle through a thrilling Diski Tournament and serving traditional treats like the ‘kota’ and Coke, which fans enjoy at stadiums.

Anto Kagisho, the campus communications person, echoed the sentiment.

“The heritage festival is about celebrating diversity and creating an inclusive space where students can take pride in who they are and where they come from. It’s a highlight of our calendar because it fosters unity while allowing students to express themselves in a fun and meaningful way.”
