Entertainment on the square – One week was funny, the next absolutely magical
Theatre on the Square eased out of winter with a hilarious problem child, and into spring with Mo Magic.
Comedy is always welcomed in Sandton, where Loyiso Madinga returned with his hilarious stand-up comedy routine, Problem Child.
Madinga’s witty, humorous show ran at the beloved Sandton on the Square for five days, from August 27–31. The show had something for everyone from start to finish.

Opening for Madinga was Panch Gasela – who delivered a standing-ovation-worthy series of quality jokes at the first show on August 27.
Gasela’s side-splitting reflective sense of humour saw him joking about anything on meeting the love of his life while buying a pregnancy test; to having to speak in deep isiZulu when journeying on a taxi with a Zulu driver.
The laughter simply continued when Madinga took to the stage. Well-travelled, Madinga first gagged about how South Africa’s nyaope (street narcotic) users would have a field day if they arrived in suburban New York to find unfenced residential properties.

The hilarity ensued, as Madinga cleverly wove historical accuracy and current affairs into his routine – as well as when he spoke in the voices of South Africa’s leaders Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
Problem Child’s successful return to Theatre on the Square presented audiences in Sandton with intelligent, hilarious reflection on South Africa over the past 30 years.
Mo Magic in Sandton
The magic on the square continued into the next week for the theatre venue, when engineer turned performing magician Mohammed ‘Mo Magic’ Moorad’s Stage of Wonders magic show opened at the popular theatre.
At opening night on September 4, Moorad showed Sandton theatregoers that where there is Mo Magic, there will be more children than most have ever seen together on a Wednesday evening.
Audience members knew they were in for a magical evening when Mo Magic started the show by throwing a flame ball, and the flame turned into a smartphone.
He followed this trick up by switching on the phone’s torch, and physically removing the torchlight with his hand.
Stage of Wonders was definitely a feast of family-friendly magic, mentalism, and stellar storytelling – the sort of experience which leaves a lasting impression.
Although a realist, and not a believer in magic, audience member Eleanor Katyatya conceded after the show that she found some of the tricks in Stage of Wonders to be believable.
“Like when he touched the one partner, and the other partner felt the taps: that one got me,” Katyatya said. “Knowing the couple personally made it more believable – they were just as shocked as I was.”
