A newly appointed head coach at Varsity College

Coach Maseko aims to take the football club to great heights and to instil some great values in exceptional sportsmen on and off the field.

An audit manager by day and a soccer fanatic after work Sizwe Maseko has been appointed head coach of The IIE’s Varsity College’s Football Club’s men’s team in Sandton. He started his coaching career in 2011 with the Res Football Team, Wits Academy, University of Johannesburg first team and the SAB League which is now known as ‘Hollywood Bets’.
He obtained his South African Football Association (Safa) D coaching licence in 2015.
His short-term goal for the team is to ensure that it consists of mostly students as the team prepares to participate in USSA towards the end of the year.

According to Maseko, he hopes to one day get the team to participate in Varsity Sports where the team will compete against big universities.

When asked what his values are as a coach, he said it is all about respect.

“I respect my players and expect them to respect me, the process, the game and their opponents. They need to put the work in during training season, bring in the wins while not forgetting that they need to have fun on the field as this is the reason they fell in love with the game in the first place”.

He added that his contributions through his coaching will include developing, and implementing sportsmanship, teamwork and exceptional sportsmen who are academics as well.

“I want to ensure that my guidance and mentorship to the team becomes exceptional for individuals who will one day look back at their experience in the classroom and on the field with pride.”

He explained that he believes that academics are important, as he will also encourage the players to take their academics seriously so that they acquire their qualifications which will lay the foundations for their careers.
