Department of Education promote BPS educator to Deputy position

Long-standing Bryanston Primary School educator has been appointed as the school’s new deputy principal.

The Gauteng Department of Education has appointed one of Bryanston Primary’s own to tackle the role of deputy principal at the school.

Shalini Baliram was appointed into the new portfolio on October 1 – a role which she assumed on October 11 when schools reopened.

“I’ve been at Bryanston Primary for just over 10 years now,” Baliram said, sharing her journey to becoming deputy principal. Baliram has worn many hats at the school; teacher, grade head, and head of department being some of her career highlights.

Teaching mathematics inspired Baliram to pursue higher education for herself, obtaining her degree with honours in mathematics – as well as a masters degree in management and leadership.

“For me, it was about changing the attitudes towards the subject, and watching learners grow and develop their passion for the subject as well, which is just amazing,” said Baliram. “Then I did supervision, [over] honours students for the University of Johannesburg; while doing all of that, I built up my career here at Bryanston Primary.”

Baliram, who resides in the Randburg, enjoys spending her spare time with her youngest daughter in Sandton – opting to reserve her weekends for time spent with family.

“We do a lot of movies, just to spend some time with my little one that’s still at this school,” Baliram said. “Whether it’s just going to the mall and walking around, having dinner together, just to spend that little bit of family time together; anything that they enjoy doing, we do it together.”

Crediting her success to her journey from Kwa-Zulu Natal to Johannesburg, Baliram’s career-driven outlook is inspired by her children and the learners she has come into contact with.

Baliram is still a teacher, filling in for other educators when the need arises.

“It’s a rewarding profession in terms of the love we receive from learners,” Balini concluded. “My best part of the day is being in the classroom.”
