Manhole cover in Bryanston mysteriously replaced

JRA encourages residents to report JRA-related services or road-related defects on 086 056 2874.

A missing manhole at the corner of Main and Sloane roads was mysteriously replaced overnight after two weeks of Sandton Chronicle making enquiries.

Bryanston resident Jack Patel had raised concerns over the missing manhole on September 26.

“I am affected by this hole in the road as we use this road every week when we go to church,” he said at the time.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) was contacted by this publication on September 28 and they responded that the manhole was the property of a private telecommunications agency.

“Our regional inspectors assessed the intersection over this weekend and can confirm that the reported missing manhole belongs to Neotel,” said JRA spokesperson Bertha Peters-Scheepers who supplied Neotel’s contact details.

The number, however, was no longer in service. Further attempts to contact Neotel were made through a number supplied by the company’s online platform. This number went to a voice messaging service where the enquiry regarding the manhole was left as a voice message.

The missing manhole came to the attention of Ward 106 councillor Chris Santana who had also raised the matter with JRA.

However, on October 13, Santana informed the Sandton Chronicle that the missing manhole at that interchange had mysteriously been replaced overnight.

“I do not know who fixed it but I was shocked when I drove past that the missing manhole was replaced. Thank you for making us try and reach Neotel.”
