Sello Maake KaNcube – a generation of prolific theatre

Sello Maake KaNcube has returned to Sandton for this year’s second run of the adaptation of John Kani’s 'Nothing But The Truth'

The highly gifted, generation-bridging Sello Maake KaNcube has returned to Sandton to lead the stellar cast of Nothing But The Truth for the production’s second run at Theatre on the Square this year.

“My favourite place in Sandton is the Theatre-on-the-Square,” said Maake KaNcube at the end of the opening show on October 4. “This has almost become my little haven, where I come and let my little spirit, my child-like spirit come to play.”

Maaka KaNcube, admired fondly as having played Archie Moroka in Generations back in the 90s, has won multiple awards for his craft; these include the Naledi Award for best actor for his portrayal of Mandela in the production Rivonia Trial, as well as the Delro Award for best actor in The Suit. He has become a household staple in South Africa for his diverse and ever-gripping portrayals, whether on stage, television or in films. He is an internationally acclaimed thespian, and has travelled the globe, bringing characters to life.

“The characters borrow from me,” said Maake KaNcube jovially. “They’re just words on a page, and I lend them my life experience; at the end of the show, it’s the end of the show.”

These are words spoken by a true teacher who has gained an unparalleled command of presence as an actor. He elaborates on how he is able to live beyond his characters portrayed as a thespian, particularly Sipho in Nothing But The Truth – a deep, layered character.

“Because you know why? In life, I, Sello, am a deep, layered person. That is how I can lend this character all the layers of life-experience that I’ve had. I lend him that, and then once the play is done, it’s like ‘Who can I borrow again?’.”

Maake KaNcube reiterated in closing how much the Theatre-on-the-Square means to him. “Theatre-on-the Square is a little gem, trapped in this corporate world. But to find an artistic space in that is just out of this world for me.”
