Hyde Park High boys’ chess team crowned champs

Chess is a board game for two players, called White and Black, each controlling an army of chess pieces in their color, with the objective to checkmate the opponent's king.

During the King David Victory Park Chess Festival at the school, Hyde Park High School boys showed off their chess skills.

Six schools participated in the tournament including Wendywood High, Sandown High, Alpha Tutorial, Parktown Girls, King David Victory Park and the Hyde Park High boys’ chess team, which was crowned festival champions.

According to Hyde Park teacher Tamirirashe Shava, the team amassed 18 points and was six points ahead of their distant rivals.

“The outstanding performer for the school was Grade 11 learner Tiago Rex, who won all three of his matches.”

He added the technical team of teachers including himself, Dr Janita Mostert, and external coach Orlando Santos, have strategically guided the chess team

“The aim is to ensure that the school becomes a dominant competitor at future school chess tournaments.”
