SPCA Sandton shows love to Alexandra’s pets

Sandton SPCA reached out to pet owners in Alexandra for pet sterilisation and vaccination.

Sandton SPCA hosted its seasonal vaccination and sterilisation drive in Alexandra on August 13.

The initiative, according to SPCA Sandton general manager and senior inspector Stephan Maila, was to curb the rising number of strays in that community.

“It’s important that we curb strays through sterilisation,” Maila said. “A female dog can have multiple litters… 80% of the animals brought through our doors at SPCA Sandton are stray animals from Alexandra.”

According to Maila, the other agenda for reaching out to Alexandra was the SPCA’s plan for tackling rabies by vaccinating cats and dogs against the disease.

As many as 12 dogs showed up with their owners at the outreach event in the first few minutes of the SPCA arriving. A 13th dog waddled over to just say hello upon recognising the scent of the SPCA and volunteers, such as Daniel Brauer, who shared words on the importance of the initiative.

“Where some people keep animals for love, other people keep them for security and often mistreat them,” said Brauer. “Not in all cases but these guys are here to provide the care that’s not always accessible in Alexandra.”

Ginger, an adorable puppy, was brought by his owner Karabo Chakale to be sterilised. On the way to the SPCA clinic, Ginger got car sick. Still, Ginger will be going back home with food acquired through his bravery in participating in the drive to curb the overpopulation of dogs in Northern Joburg by going sterile. The SPCA reported reaching their target of 20 sterilisations during the outreach campaign.
