A day out at the Douglasdale Dairy
Crawford International Sandton Grade 000s visit the dairy to learn more about milk.
As part of Crawford International Sandton Pre-Primary’s Unit of Inquiry, Sharing the Planet, their central idea was to explore the relationship between people, animals, and insects in different contexts.
The Grade 000 children chose the cow as one of the animals to research.
Nadia Cooke, the project coordinator at the school said, “The classes discussed the suitability of cows for specific functions and that cows provide milk, butter, cream, and cheese.”
Cooke pointed out that the children, with their teachers, then debated and collaborated over how milk was made.
“The Grade 000 teachers at Crawford International Sandton Pre-Primary then planned an exciting outing to the Douglasdale Dairy Farm for an informative morning of edutainment where they learned so much about dairy production.”
She added they were given white Douglasdale Dairy coats and disposable hair net covers to wear and then allowed to visit the production area.
“Learners watched through the viewing window to see how various processes, from the raw milk entering the dairy to the bottled milk that leaves the dairy farm, are produced.”
She said the day was a success as the learners got the chance to bottle-feed two baby calves called Dixie and Matilda, which was the highlight of their morning.
“They then enjoyed a picnic, climbed the jungle gym, and explored the gardens, observing two mischievous cows trying to pinch some of the picnic food.”
