SARAFINA! returns to the big screen

SARAFINA! returns to big screen as an homage to women who lead South Africa through the struggle against apartheid for Women’s month in August

United International Pictures (UIP) Africa in Sandton hosted a small audience for a pre-screening of SARAFINA! on July 19 – most of whom were experiencing the historic film on the big screen for the first time.

“I’ve watched [SARAFINA!] a million times, and I still appreciate that the soundtrack is timeless,” said Keamogetswe Matlala at the end of the event. “It’s one of those productions which prove we’ve come a long way.”

Her companion, Zandile Khumalo echoed similar sentiments about the soundtrack – expounding by sharing insight on how captivating and enlightening the movie remains.

“It might not seem like there’s light at the end of the tunnel, but we’re getting there,” Khumalo said. “We’ll get there.”

SARAFINA! has been remastered, and is returning to the big screen accompanied by this new poster celebrating the female leads in the film adaptation.

The magical brilliance of SARAFINA! is returning to the big screen in South Africa, digitally remastered; and heralding a captivating new poster – which depicts the powerful female characters in the film, specially designed for this release in August as a homage to the strong, tireless and endlessly loving women of South Africa.

Among these powerful characters are Sarafina’s mother, Angelina, who works as a domestic assistant played by the legendary Miriam Makeba; Mary Masembuko, the outspoken and inspiring school teacher played by Academy Award winner Whoopi Goldberg; and Sarafina, the fearless young girl and student activist played by Leleti Khumalo.

“These characters vividly portray the vital role women played as the backbone of the struggle,” said Videovision Entertainment’s Nilesh Signh. “This timely release during Women’s Month serves as a poignant tribute to the indomitable spirit of these brave women.”

SARAFINA! will be released in South Africa on August 11 by Videovision Entertainment through UIP Africa in commemoration of Women’s Month.
