Massive road repair works on the corner of William Nicol and Sandton drives

Operations manager, marketing and communication of Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA), Bertha Peters-Scheepers, shares their solutions for the corner of William Nicol and Sandton drives potholes.

What has been a nightmare for drivers at the corner of William Nicol and Sandton drives is now being fixed.

After several weeks, residents and drivers complained about the traffic congestion that the potholes had created.

According to JRA spokesperson Bertha Peters-Scheepers, there are two issues causing potholes on the road.

“A sewer leaked onto the road, which Joburg Water will attend to; the stormwater system is blocked and the groundwater that is seeping out of the embankment of the road cannot drain effectively due to the blockage in the storm water system, causing the water to run onto the road.”

She added that due to the heavy traffic demands on the road, the water then ends up entering the road layer works, block cracking occurs on the wearing course, and the road breaks up.

“As the temporary berm has been created to channel the water next to the road to clear the stormwater drain, we have already tried our jet vac machines to no avail, and we will need to use a camera or open up the system at intervals to check for the blockage, and a subsoil drainage system may also be required.”

Peters-Scheepers highlighted that the process of fixing everything is underway, and as a temporary safety measure, the JRA team has erected safety signage and filled the potholes with a temporary mixture.

“JRA will work to resolve the issue in no time and we do apologise for the poor condition of the road and wish to alert motorists to drive with extreme caution over this section of the road.”
