Lelethu shined at the Central Gauteng Acrobatics District Championships

Acrobatics is the performance of human feats of balance, agility, and motor coordination. Acrobatic skills are used in performing arts, sporting events, and martial arts.

For Brescia House School, Lelethu Naledi Zulu has raised the school flag high in the field of acrobatics.

The seven-year-old, who started dancing in September 2021, competed in the Central Gauteng Acrobatics District Championships and came first in her level.

She received her district colours and was selected to represent the Johannesburg District at the National Championship.

Speaking in an interview, Lelethu said she originally wanted to do gymnastics, but the gymnastics school in their area had a long waiting list. Her mom heard about The Natasha Academy of Dance.

“When we were at the academy, we saw acrobatics as one of their classes- even though it looks similar, it is different from gymnastics, so I decided to try it out. I fell in love with it and have never looked back since.”

Lelethu pointed out that receiving the highest score in her level (pre-level 1) last year at the district competition and a nice trophy has been the best part of her acrobatics journey.

“Some people do not know the difference between acrobatics and gymnastics. They are similar but very different. Acrobatics is dancing on a hard floor or stage, and we use our bodies only during the performance. Gymnastics is performed on soft surfaces with mats and other pieces of equipment. Acrobats are similar to the people who are on stage in circuses. We do a lot of body contortion movements.”

She explained that the challenges she has, have been related to tough acrobatic moves that she sees older girls doing but cannot do. Even though it is hard to see some awesome moves, she hopes one day, with practice, she can be the best at it, as she plans to pursue a career in acrobatics.
