Sandton Library welcomes everyone to e-learning classes

Sandton residents and interested individuals from the surrounding areas are encouraged to go and learn more about e-learning and computer literacy at the Sandton Library.

Sandton Library, on May 31, re-launched the e-Learning Classroom for Digital Literacy.

As the e-classroom activities were disrupted by the COVID-19 lockdowns in 2020, the Sandton Library’s senior librarian, Mseni Tembani, in collaboration with the Alexandra Library’s senior librarian, Yoliswa Thangane, invited youth and adults from Alexandra and Sandon to a relaunch event at the library.

With support from the e-learning office and Region E library staff, the reopening was to invite youth to gain digital skills using new computers or their own devices and free WIFI inside the library.

The attendees were introduced to the library services website, online courses from Microsoft, IBM, and Google, and how to search for jobs online.

Tembani said, “The main aim of the e-learning classroom is to promote digital literacy for all ages, children, adults, and senior citizens.”

He emphasised that they provide internet-based assets that include short course programmes, online chess, basic computer skills, and coding to help students and learners with their homework and research, as well as help job seekers find and apply for jobs.

“Sandton Library is located within one of the most visited tourist sites, Nelson Mandela Square. The centre is open to all members of the community who can access it, be it locally or internationally, which includes tourists who come in and access emails and printing.”

Tembani concluded by saying that he requests the community to take good care of the e-learning classroom and computers as it is the only way the Sandton library can develop the community, and discourages misuse and possible theft of these digital tools.
