The third transdisciplinary theme at Crawford International Sandton

The transdisciplinary themes provide children with authentic learning experiences that are not confined to the boundaries of traditional subjects.

Learners at Crawford International Sandton Preparatory had a full day of technology, completing all their work on their devices and using the smart board.

Grade 4 had an exciting start to the third transdisciplinary theme.

Grade 4s from Crawford International Sandton Preparatory have a full day of technology.

Nadia Cooke, the project coordinator at the school, said, “To provoke the learners’ interest in the installment of their Unit of Inquiry, ‘How We Organise Ourselves,’ the learners had a full day of technology, enjoying their devices and using a smart board.”

She added all devices were handed to the teacher the following day, and the learners had to rely only on handwritten notes or messages delivered via the intercom system.

“The central idea for this unit is that digital media changes how people access information and connect with each other.”

Learners are given a chance to explore technology in class.

The learners incorporated interesting learning engagements from multiple disciplines, using the lens and outcomes of subjects such as digital literacy (ICT), languages, personal, social, and physical education, and social studies.

Cooke elaborated that the learners explored levels of access to digital media and how this had changed over time.

“They also investigated and researched how digital media has been able to connect people locally and across the globe. The core learning engagement is for learners to understand that people make choices based on their understanding of how digital media works, and the actions they take because of its use do make a difference.”
