Oageng helps his community to liven up their imagination through photography

21-year-old Wits student plans to expand his photography business

Creating memories for people and their loved ones is what one Wits student, Oageng Mofokeng, is passionate about.

Here is his story:

My name is Oageng Mofokeng, also known as Slim, and I was born and raised in Soweto.
I am studying fine arts at Wits. I’m a photographer, and my love for photography started when I used to watch movies.I’ve always asked myself so many questions about how movies are shot and which equipment is used to shoot them.
Because of my curiosity, I asked one of my friends who was studying film at AFDA, a film college in Auckland Park, if I could accompany him to see all the types of equipment that are used to create films. That’s how I fell in love with photography.
My journey in photography started when I was asked to attend events and capture the moments, after which I became a personal photographer.

One of the biggest highlights of my life was being a personal photographer for Pearl Thusi when she was doing a national launch with Mr Smeg. I also worked with Kamo Mphela in 2020 when she turned 22.

Currently, I am Motlatsi Mafatshe`s photographer. He is an actor and has been cast in television dramas and movies such as How to ruin Christmas, Isidingo, and Love lives here. What I love about photography is that I get to travel a lot and meet new people who are also passionate about photography.
One of the challenges of being a photographer is to get booked for a job or a gig as there are so many photographers out there.

My advice for upcoming photographers is they need to stay consistent because consistency is the only way to progress in this career.
I literally cannot wait to see what the future holds for me.
