R3 000 raised by DSJ for Hotel Hope Ministries

The Deutsche International Schule in Parktown business studies class managed to raise R3 000 from an initial investment of R30.

The Grade 10 business studies learners at the Deutsche International Schule Johannesburg (DSJ) gave back to the community through entrepreneurship skills. In a project called R30 in 10 days, they ran their business for 10 days with a limited investment of R30.

Head of Department (HOD) for business studies Dena Hanouch who designed the project said learners spent the time advertising, selling and networking in an effort to make the most profit and receive a good return.

Hanouch said learners had to do market research to identify the needs of their target audience. They created a budget and kept a record of stock turnover, sales and ultimately profits. They designed advertisements and implemented marketing strategies to reach customers.

He said the idea is they would use profits each day to purchase stock to ensure that they can meet the demand of their customers for 10 days and maximise their profits. “After two weeks of work and selling before school and during their breaks with only 10 learners in the business class, they managed to raise in excess of R3 000,” the HOD said.

The class decided to use the majority of their profits to buy nappies for the children’s home, Hotel Hope Ministries. They also spent the afternoon interacting and playing with all the children.
