UJ celebrates its exemplary Woman of Stature winner

Buccleuch-based resident and senior lecturer at UJ shines bright at the International Women of Achievement Awards.

Two academics from the University of Johannesburg (UJ) have come out on top at the eighth International Women of Achievement Awards that recognise excellence in their respective industries.

Buccleuch-based resident Professor Corne Davis of the faculty of humanities and the department of strategic communication is one of the two academics.

Davis was named the 2023 Woman of Stature in Education and Training, as well as the overall winner of the 2023 Woman of Stature Awards.

She will go on to represent South Africa at the Global Women of Stature Awards in September this year.

Davis is a senior lecturer in strategic communication and a prolific social activist who has dedicated her life and work to combating
gender-based violence.

She has authored numerous papers, including The Costly Impact of GBV, which emphasises the need for the private sector to address the reality of GBV in the workplace as it formulates company policy and governance structures.

Davis was delighted that her work on the topic is finally receiving the attention it deserves.

“I am feeling ecstatic, for more than one reason. Besides the fact that it is such a tremendous honour, I am so happy that the work I have done in the field of gender-based violence has now been acknowledged.”

She adds that this means they are getting somewhere, and people now consider the work that addresses gender-based violence is worthy of winning this award.

“This is a big deal, and I am happy to be able to fly UJ’s flag high.”
