Sandton Victim Empowerment encourages giving

Sandton Victim Empowerment Programme encourages the community to spare a moment for those less fortunate this holiday season.

As the community gets back to a pre-Covid-19 lifestyle, the Sandton Victim Empowerment Programme (Vep) encourages those to spare a thought for those who will be less fortunate.

According to Sandton Vep training coordinator Su Mills, this may not be a festive and happy time for everyone, including those who may have lost a loved one, or have experienced hardships and difficult circumstances.

“This has been a year of re-adjustment that also brings with it its issues and we all need to realise and respect that every single person we meet may be going through some form of crisis or trauma and a simple smile or greeting may be the best thing that has happened to them in a while – any small kindness costs us nothing yet it can mean the world to someone else. “

Sandton Vep, based at the Sandton Police Station, offers trauma counselling to victims of rape and domestic violence and also assists those who have suffered trauma as a result of witnessing a crime incident.

“Many of us have much to be grateful for and if we are fortunate to be in a position to give back, then this can be the best time to put that into action and most importantly, take care of yourself, your family and friends.”

Mills added that while the team looked forward to the year ahead, the group were always looking for new volunteer counsellors.

“The Sandton Community needs you and if you feel you have what it takes to be a Vep counsellor, please feel free to contact us for details.”
