Theatre on the Square looks back on a year since its reopening

The Theatre on the Square team thanks the community for its loyal and continued support as it reflects on a year since reopening.

Marking a year since it’s reopening, the Theatre on the Square thanks the community for its continued support.

According to owner Daphne Kuhn, during the pandemic, she thought that the theatre might never reopen.

“The devastating pandemic made reopening seem insurmountable for us and our decimated entertainment industry. Exacerbating this, we had no sponsorship from the state, province or corporate sector – yet, ongoing running costs, rent and staff salaries.”

She added that with the support of the community and the media, combined with its ongoing fundraising efforts, reopening in 2022 was possible.

“We have presented the best of local and international theatre, music and comedy as well as events while generating, at the same time, work opportunities for many superb talents in our theatre and entertainment industry.”

Kuhn noted that being locked down gave the community time to reflect on the significant role that live entertainment plays in daily life an how it was taken for granted.

“We couldn’t allow our iconic theatre to have its lights switched off. It has brought so much joy to so many.”

As a private independent theatre for 27 years, having produced 2 600 theatre productions and concerts, the team was determined to keep the theatre alive. Without a theatre, there can be no entertainment, upliftment or education for our public and our children.

“Once again thank you again for your overwhelming support of our gem box little theatre – also to the media and Liberty Two Degrees who so warmly came to the party this year. Bravo to you all for your patronage and loyalty.

“We would like to wish you a happy and safe festive season. We look forward to seeing you at the theatre in 2023.”
