Impact of flooding could reach R150 million – JRA

Continues heavy rains and infrastructural may cost the City of Johannesburg an estimated R150 million, says the JRA as it continues to assess the damage of the recent flood in the city.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has estimated that the impact of the recent flooding across the city could cost an estimated R150 million.

This was according to JRA head of planning Musa Mkhacane in a media briefing on December 15, outlining the extent of the damage caused by the recent heavy rains as well as what interventions the City would be taking.

Earlier this month, Johannesburg experienced high volumes of rain over a two-week period that led to the collapsing of roads, overflowing and compromising of bridges and flooded storm water drains.

While the city in its entirety was affected, Regions C, D, E, F and G were identified as being particularly heavily impacted.

Mkhacane noted that it would take JRA about two weeks to completely assess the extent of the damage. Due to the Christmas break, the finalised figures would only be available in January 2023.

Ahead of the festive season, MMC for Transport Funzi Ngobeni encouraged motorists to exercise caution and refrain from taking any risks on flooded roads and bridges.
