Local cannabis business motivated by the community

What started out as a gap in the community has turned into an ever-growing small business for Crafted Plant, specialists in CBD-infused edibles.

What started as a need in the community has turned into a small business for entrepreneurs Adrienne and Vergil Jacobs.

The pair and their brand Crafted Plant were among the small businesses chosen by the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition to exhibit their offering at this year’s Cannabis Expo in Sandton.

According to Vergil, the idea for the business came along when friends experienced consistent tension headaches and various other types of bodily pain. They had exhausted their medical avenues and were open to trying something different.

“We came up with the idea to try and develop something and that was a CBD-infused gummy with a low dose. After a couple of days, they [friends] started to notice a difference and experience some relief,” said Vergil.

Vergil noted that that was a big motivator to drive the idea for the business.

“There was another family out in Woodstock where the father has dementia and they have been using CBD-infused gummies. It has shifted their whole life experience, offering the father relief.”

Today Crafted Plant’s CBD-infused offering has grown from gummies to chocolate bars and bonbons, baked goods and even dog treats.

He added without the support of the community, the businesses as well as its presence at this year’s Cannabis Expo would not have been possible.

“We got the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be here [at the expo] with the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition, providing us with a platform. We seized the opportunity because if we wanted to be here on our own, this whole experience would have cost us between R50 000 to R60 000.”

Vergil added when attendees visited their stall at the expo, it was important for them to take away the knowledge of what could be done with CBD.

“A large part of our business is the education aspect, where customers walk away enlightened and looking forward to what they experienced and bought.”
