Bunny chow champs celebrate spicy sweet victory

Yogesh Babulal and Jamie Jane, share their secret for having the best bunny chows in all over Johannesburg.

Climbing Mount Everest, landing a perfect ollie on a first attempt, or even winning the best bunny chow in Johannesburg competition against experienced cooks has to be on the list of greatest accomplishments.

Woodmead couple and founders of ‘A couple of Foodiez’, Yogesh Babulal and Jamie Jane, were the talk of the town on October 22. Both individuals were stunned to find themselves receiving a first-place award following their bunny chow competition victory during the annual curry and craft festival at Gold Reef City.

“This was a three-month prejudging competition. We don’t know home many people participated but from the looks of things on the day of the announcement, it was a lot. We were put in as a wildcard so in all honesty, we didn’t know much. We were up against catering companies and restaurants that have been participating for years. It was a big achievement,” said Babulal.

The couple explained that their love for food goes way back to the earlier days of their relationship and have recently entered a new phase of their found passion.

“We reached a point where we loved our food so much that we wanted to share that experience with others. For us, it’s always been about getting it out there. Not to brag but we know we’re good cooks because of the intense love we have for food. Initially, it started off with our blog food reviews now we’re here,” said Jane.

Founders of ‘A couple of Foodiez’ have been sharing their creations with residents from all over the Sandton area for over a couple of months. They did not hesitate to share secrets behind their victory and future plans for their food journey.

“What makes a great bunny chow is the quality of spices used, great measurements, passion, love and also finding a new way to improve,” said Babulal. “Our next step is to find a new name for our business and have a restaurant, it has always been our dream and we’re gradually getting there,” concluded Jane.
