Woodmead, Rivonia and surrounds identified as hotspots for housebreaking and theft out of motor vehicles

Residents and motorists are encouraged to take extra precaution as Sandton Police notes trends of housebreaking and theft of out motor vehicle in sector one of the policing precinct in October.

Theft out of motor vehicles and housebreaking were among the crime trends that greatly contributed to the sector one crime stats in October for the Sandton policing precinct.

This was according to Sandton Police sector one commander Sergeant Trevor Rama during the Sandton CPF’s recent monthly meeting.

Sector one includes the suburbs of Edenburg, Gallo Manor, Khyber Rock, Morningside Manor Ext 2, Rivonia, Sunninghill, Woodlands and Woodmead

According to the crime statistics shared by the Sergeant, there were 15 cases of theft out of a motor vehicle and 12 cases of house breaking reported to the Sandton Police Station in October.

“Sunninghill and Edenburg are hotspots, victims are mostly asleep when the crime occurs. Resident must check their security and ensure that all doors and windows are properly closed.”

Rama added that residents must also ensure that the serial numbers of all electronic devices are recorded as well as photos taken to assist the police should a home be broken into.

“Serial numbers are circulated to SAPS [and] due to this information not being available, the linking of suspects to the stolen property cannot be done for the incidents reported.”

In most cases of theft out of motor vehicle, Rama noted that victims park their motor vehicles in parking lots and upon returning find that their vehicle have been remotely jammed or a window forced open. Perpetrators tend to target electrical equipment.

He added that in the affected suburbs which include Woodmead, Rivonia and Edenburg experience these crime incidents mainly between 04:00 and 12:00 and 16:00 to 19:59 on Mondays and Fridays according to the stats.
