Sandton canoeists take on Lowveld Crocodile River Race

Sandton’s very own canoeists Peter O Connor and Alex Roberts recently achieved great finished at the notoriously challenging Lowveld Crocodile River Race.

Local canoeists Peter O’Connor and Alex Roberts recently took on the challenging Lowveld Crocodile River Race in Mpumalanga.

Hosted by the Lowveld Canoe Club and infamously known as being very tough and challenging, the race was 33km-long beginning at the Kwena Dam and finishing at Old Joe’s Kaia.

O’Connor, who was one of the oldest competitors on the day, finished the race in a time of 03:09:00. He also recently returned from the International Canoe Federation’s World Marathon Championships that took place in Portugal.

Peter O’ Connor finishes the river race in just over three hours.

“With numerous much younger competitors chasing him down the river and despite having suffered from polio as a child where one of his legs was badly affected, he [O’ Connor] has never let this difficulty stop him from taking on challenges,” said Gauteng Canoe Union media liaison Jennie Dallas.

Roberts finished the race in a time of 02:08:00, taking overall eighth place and second place in the veteran age category.
