Bryanston residents left in the dark… again

Bryanston and surrounding residents continue to fight for electricity stability and reliability as Bryanston North Substation takes another hit.

The situation at Bryanston North Substation continues to worsen following a week of constant prolonged blackouts for residents.

Residents supplied by the Eskom and City Power-shared substation on Sloane Street were left without electricity for more than 24 hours from November 8 and several outages in the days following, after an explosion at the substation.

According to City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena, the part of the substation maintained by them tripped due to blown terminations on the transformer connection and blown transformers on two ring main units.

With week-long rains, restoring power to the area became a challenge.

This followed maintenance work done by Eskom on their part of the substation during the first week of November.

According to a written response by the Eskom Media Desk, the maintenance was needed following a spate of vandalism.

However, the City Power part of the substation required a complete overhaul following a devastating fire in December 2019.

Mangena noted that City Power planned to budget for this in its next financial plan.

To improve electricity reliability to residents fed from the substation, City Power installed a mini substation in Bryanston North on November 11.
