Rotary Sandton celebrates the success of art fair in aid of local youth centre

This year’s Rotary Club of Sandton Yards of Arts fair was a phenomenal success, gathering scores of members, art lovers and enthusiasts to support the Valley Youth Centre.

The Rotary Club of Sandton recently successfully hosted its second annual fundraising Yards of Art fair at the Victoria Yards.

Art lovers, enthusiasts and rotary members gathered to support this year’s fundraiser in aid of the Timbuktu in the Valley Youth Centre in Lorentzville.

“Supporting the arts and local artists is not just a nice thing to do, we as the Rotary Club of Sandton believe that the arts define who are as a people and provide an account of our history for the next generation,” said past president Kabelo Kgodane.

The three-day fair hosted dozens of artists such as Siyabonga Ndlandla, Lee Pardini, Caitlin Bouwer, Gwen Nkosi and Val Thompson.

Each submitted an extraordinary variety of work, from oils, prints, monotypes, pastel, pencil, ceramics, bronzes, and mosaics. Attendees were spoilt for choice.

This year’s poetry competition winners, alongside their families, were also in attendance.

“As part of the opening night, the winners of the Sandton Rotary Schools’ Poetry Competition under the theme ‘it could be a Wednesday’ recited their winning work and received their well-deserved prizes,” said Kgodane.

The runners-up and learners who had highly commended entries also received certificates.

The evening’s entertainment included the soothing sounds of the Redhill School Orchestra, alongside a delicious five-star meal prepared by talented Chef Debbie Bolton with ingredients sponsored by Anthorn.

This year’s poerty competition winners share their winning pieces at the art fair.

“One of the highlights of the evening was a very special performance by the children of the Timbuktu in the Valley Youth Centre. It was also wonderful to have our student Rotarians who volunteered to serve food to our guests that evening.

“A huge thanks to Rotex President Ryan Cox, Lesedi Jantjies, Megan Cimardi, Emma and Mathew,” said Kgodane.

Art classes by the talented Severa Rech Cassarino were also a hit among attendees.

“Overall, it was a great weekend of art and once again a huge thanks to Rotarians, their families and friends who rallied together to make this such a wonderful event.”

While the fair might have physically concluded, various art pieces, including the original art deck chairs, are still on sale online until October 31.
