Alex and Sandton learners experience the jewel in the City’s public transport crown

The City’s week-long school holiday programme ended with the highlight being experiencing the Gautrain for 40 learners from Alexandra and Sandton.

The City of Johannesburg’s school holiday programme ended with a ride on a golden bullet for 40 learners from Sandton and Alexandra.

In line with Transport Month this October, the learners boarded the Gautrain at the Marlboro Station, taking the train to Park Station.

According to the director of strategic coordination for the City’s Department of Environment and Infrastructure Services, the week-long programme offered daily activities targeted at children from day-care centres, orphanages and libraries.

The group journeys on the bus to the Marlboro Gautrain Station for a day of fun.

This included environmental edutainment to educate learners about environmental issues and how they can play their role in taking care of the environment.

“The city is committed to becoming a resilient, livable and sustainable City and environmental sustainability is a collective responsibility across all city departments, the private sector, citizens and other spheres of government.”

At the end of the week, Aphiwe Mkhize, a 13-year-old pupil from Sandton View Combined School, who came through the Alexandra Library, could not contain her excitement about the Gautrain trip.

“It was my first time using the Gautrain and the experience was out of this world. I also learned a lot about taking care of the environment and ensuring that we avoid littering and always use the bins provided,” she said.
