Local principal shares why it’s cool to care for kids

Through her tough times as a learner, Montrose Primary School, Sonette van Loggerenberg, cuts off the trend for her learners in order to live in confidence by pursuing their purpose.

The current principal of Montrose Primary School, Sonette van Loggerenberg, has always been a firm believer in allowing children to pursue their goals and dreams while guiding them. According to Loggerenberg, her inspiration to push children to their purpose was drawn from her teachers when she was a young child.

Born in Oudshroorn and raised in Boksburg, Loggerenberg’s upbringing was filled with ups and downs just like any other individual. The principal shared a couple of memories of being a learner that prepared her for the role of the principal of Montrose Primary School.

“I’ve had my fair share of the school experience as a learner. Some were not so great and others made me stronger. I was a soft-spoken child and people would take advantage of that by bullying me. My true passion at the time when I was a primary school learner was doing athletics, which I truly loved,” said Loggerenberg.

Within her quest of finding her voice, she stumbled upon her hero who projected her voice, “I was never a leader or prefect. I only got out of my shell by Grade 10 and the person who helped me was my athletics coach: he saw something in me that I did not. As I slowly developed my confidence through his encouraging words, I managed to find my voice and purpose in life which I will forever be grateful for.”

Through the guidance of the people that saw something that she could not see within herself, Loggerenberg added that her main goal in life is to help every child with everything and anything. “I love all learners but I have a soft spot for those in the background that are not on the top achievement list. I help out where I can to encourage others to find their voices,” said the Loggerenberg.

The principal who is not a stranger to speaking her mind concluded by pleading with parents of young learners to be more attentive, loving, and patient with their children in these times.
