Stay alert with these load shedding safety tips

SAPS shares safety tips for residents as load-shedding continues to put households and infrastructure at risk.

The police have encouraged residents and communities to remain alert and vigilant as consistent rolling blackouts continue to leave residents and infrastructure vulnerable to criminals.

The police service shares the following safety tips for the communities to keep in mind:

  • Stay alert and be aware of your surroundings when arriving at or leaving your home.
  • Make sure that your cellphone battery is fully charged at all times.
  • Ensure that you know how to manually operate electronic gates or garage doors so that you are able to gain access to your property during a power outage. Use padlocks to lock all of your gates.
  • Make sure that you have a sufficiently sized backup battery on your alarm system and electric fencing to ensure uninterrupted power to your security systems during an outage
  • Be cautious when using candles or gas lamps for lighting to prevent fires. Keep it out of reach of children.
  • If you are using a generator never operate it in a confined area as it can produce carbon monoxide, which can be fatal.
