King David Primary School get into the gardening spirit this spring

The Grade 7 class at King David Primary School in Sandton embraced Spring by planting an on-campus herb and vegetable garden.

Spring has sprung and the learners and King David Primary School in Sandton have embraced the vibrant season with both hands.

Grade 7 learners recently spent their day creating a beautiful on-campus herb and vegetable garden. The garden will not only provide fresh and nutritious produce for the school tuck shop but it will also feed the school’s 15 resident rabbits.

According to the school’s Kayla Grusd, since adopting the rabbits from rescue organisation Berario Bunnies about a month ago, the idea for a herb and vegetable garden was the perfect long-term feeding programme.

Grade 7 learners enjoy a fun day planting in the garden.

The Berario Bunnies organisation rescues, traps and sterilises rabbits to relocate them to safe homes in Johannesburg.

“These [rabbits] are either abused, dumped or surrendered pets that are often left to fend for themselves in the wild, despite being domesticated animals. King David Sandton wanted to help and we thought we could do our part by giving a home to some of the bunnies.”

The school built an enclosure that ensures that the animals have a happy, healthy and safe place to live in the school.

Grusd added that through the planting of the garden, the school hoped to teach the learners about where this food came from and where it is going.

Learners plant herbs in the school’s new garden.

While the Grade 7 class were part of the planting process, this was an initiative that would benefit the whole school. It would allow learners of all ages and grades to learn from the project and get a better understanding of how useful this garden was for a variety of reasons and recipients.

“We want our children to have real-life learning experiences and to be able to see the end goal. For our herb garden, the goal is to be able to feed our bunnies and this is something that the pupils will be able to see and be a part of going forward.”
