Local mom celebrates ethnic hair with salon in Hyde Park

Local mom turns her challenge of finding a good quality salon for her daughters' ethnic hair into a business opportunity which highlights the importance of customisable haircare.

When life gives you lemons you make lemonade, or in the case of local businesswoman and mother Yvonne Diogo, you turn it into a hair salon that celebrates ethnic hair.

With two toddlers, separated by two years of age, Diogo struggled to find a hair salon in the area that was not only competitively priced but also delivered quality services with responsibly sourced products. Thus came the birth of Nubian Crown in Hyde Park in 2018.

“It is one thing when you’re single and you have the luxury of being able to pop into the hair salon but when you have toddlers who can’t keep a certain hairstyle for very long, you are literally doing your child’s hair daily.”

According to Diogo, at one point she was spending more than R1 500 on one salon visit for herself and her daughters for basic services.

“I saw a gap in the market where I could provide value for clients, using responsibly sourced products, non-toxic ingredients paired with gentle techniques, at comparative prices.”

Nubian Crown celebrates that everyone’s hair has its own personality.

The journey as an entrepreneur was one of challenge, especially with Covid-19 in the mix but Diogo noted that it was important to stay on track and work through each challenge.

“It is really about perseverance and knowing what your values are, your unique selling point and being authentic.”

Diogo added that it was important to have more salons that not only offered quality services alongside quality products but also offered services for every kind of hair type, making everyone feel included.

“Everybody’s hair is different. When you come to Nubian, we give you your own personalized experience, it is customisable haircare. If you have good hair, you feel good.”
