Case against alleged murder of Delta Park High School teacher moves to the High Court

Alexandra Magistrate's Court is expected to hear bail application based on new information in August.

A pre-trial conference in the case against Bafana Mahungela (21) is expected to be held on August 16.

Mahungela’s case docket was transferred from the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court to the High Court of South Africa in May.

Mahungela is charged with kidnapping, robbery with aggravating circumstances, murder, attempted rape, and defeating the ends of justice.

The case relates to the discovery of Kirsten Anne Kluyts’ (34) lifeless body in the George Lea recreational park in Parkmore on October 29.

“Kluyts was a teacher at Delta Park High School. She participated in an athletic event that day, and other athletes realised she was missing when the race was finished,” explained Gauteng regional NPA spokesperson, Phindi Mjonondwane. “They started searching for her and found her body dumped next to a walking path.

“Mahungela was arrested at the Varsity College student residence in Benmore on November 26, 2023, following video footage obtained from the closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in the vicinity of Parkmore,” Mjonondwane concluded.

Mahungela will be back in the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on  August 1 following his filed application for bail based on new facts.
