A 38-year-old man was arrested for fraud

Alexandra Magistrate’s Court sentenced a 38-year-old man to eight years in jail on two fraud charges.

A 38-year-old man was convicted and sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment by the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on charges of fraud.

Bramley Police Station spokesperson Captain Molefe Mogodi said the man was arrested after a case of fraud had been opened against him on August 20, 2022.

In a statement provided to the police, it was mentioned that between March and May 2022, the man, through fraudulent means, made a claim for benefits that were not his.

“The man went to the Department of Home Affairs, where he filed a false application in which he reported his daughter deceased.”

During the police investigation, the fraudulent death certificate was issued and used to make claims with financial institutions, which eventually paid him out.

“The detectives discovered another case opened with Vereeniging police for the same crime; the two cases were centralised for investigation and were assigned to Bramley detectives.”

Mogodi said the daughter of the man is alive.
