Sloane Street alone owes over R9m in unpaid bills.

City Power revenue management specialist Tshepo Rammuki said, “In Randburg, the total outstanding debt amounts to more than R650m. We had no choice but to take decisive action to recover these funds.”

Alongside Sloane Street, substantial debts were also noted on other properties, including Elgin Road with R1.2m owed, Homestead Avenue with R2.3m, and Moray Drive with R1.3m.

At one Sloane Street property, City Power’s enforcement team faced resistance when the owner repeatedly refused access for disconnection.

“Despite our attempts to negotiate, we were forced to disconnect the supply using the nearest pillar box,” Rammuki explained.

Nqobani Mzizi, senior manager revenue enhancement at City Power said, that as much as they understand the economic pressures that many residents are under, they must also ensure the sustainability of their infrastructure.

“City Power encourages affected customers to reach out to their billing departments to discuss possible payment arrangements.”

He added that this campaign highlights the ongoing struggle of utilities to balance financial stability with customer care, navigating the complexities of urban infrastructure management in today’s challenging economic environment.
