Weekend overview: ANC Youth League takes to the streets amid scorching heat

The relentless sun didn't deter the Youth League members from voicing their concerns, as they rallied for jobs and economic reform in a display of youthful determination

This past weekend, thousands of ANC Youth League members marched from Luthuli House in the Johannesburg CBD to the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) in Sandton, showcasing their determination despite a severe heatwave looking to affect the region. As traffic slowed along their route, they presented a memorandum to Deputy Minister of Employment and Labour Jomo Sibiya.

During this weekend, the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) issued warnings, reporting temperatures reaching 34ºC. EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi urged residents to prioritise safety by staying indoors, drinking plenty of fluids, and protecting children from direct sunlight. Concerns were also raised about the heightened risk of veld fires, with residents advised to avoid discarding burning materials.

As the weekend concludes, residents are reminded to remain vigilant during extreme heat conditions and to take necessary precautions.
