Comic Con Africa: A pop culture extravaganza

Taking place at Johannesburg Expo Centre, this year’s Comic Con Africa, was the place to be for pop culture fans.

Comic Con Africa 2024 featured celebrity appearances, gaming tournaments, and cosplay competitions, as well as exclusive merchandise. It was an unforgettable weekend for pop culture enthusiasts.

The four-day sold-out event took place at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, and fans of all ages prepared for the experience of a lifetime. It has, once again, proven why it is the ultimate pop culture and gaming festival in the country.

Comic Con Africa has become renowned for bringing fans closer to the worlds they love. This year, streaming giants Disney+ and Netflix brought activations that immersed attendees in iconic shows like Agatha All Along and Squid Game, while Nu Metro’s pop-up cinema debuted a one-of-a-kind cinematic experience for movie lovers.

Cosplay, always a highlight, dazzled attendees with its creativity. The Comic Con Africa Championships of Cosplay crowned Blu Rohbot Studios as the overall winner, earning them the chance to represent Africa at the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo (C2E2) in Chicago in April 2025. Meanwhile, the fan-favourite cosplay vote went to a remarkable portrayal of Groot, captivating the crowd and reinforcing the festival’s celebration of creativity.

This year’s event featured gaming on a whole new level, from intense eSports tournaments to interactive gaming zones. Telkom’s Home of Gaming was the epicentre of competitive action, with teams vying for a share of the R300 000 prize pool. The Punishers emerged victorious in the Telkom VS Masters Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) competition, thrilling fans with their skill and strategy.

Artist Alley was a hive of activity, showcasing the incredible talent of both local and international artists. Fans had the chance to purchase unique artwork, custom jewellery, and even get tattoos. This creative space became a community hub where artists and fans exchanged ideas, shared inspiration, and connected over their love of the arts. Workshops from comic artist Guile Sharp and writer Les Allen offered aspiring creators valuable insights into breaking into the industry, nurturing the next generation of talent.
