Water leak reveals need for road signs on Sutherland Avenue

JW may have stopped the leak of water, but JRA could still save motorists on insurance claims costs – just by adding traffic-calming measures on Sutherland Avenue.

Although recently fixed by Johannesburg Water, a persistent water leak reopened a few days later, prompting JW to be asked what the issue with repairs was on July 24.

The site of the leak had been at the corner of Sutherland Avenue and St Andrews Road, a popular alternative route for motorists looking for swift access to Sandton Drive.

On July 29, JW spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala responded to the enquiry over how the leak at the corner in question had come to reopen and start leaking again.

JW may have fixed the leak, though this section of road where Sutherland Avenue and St Andrews Road turn into one another needs better traffic-calming measures.

“It does happen at times that a leak reoccurs after it was repaired,” Shabalala explained.
“In such cases, when the leak is reported, it is again uploaded onto the system and a job card is created for it. The road surface will then have to be re-excavated/re-opened to locate the leak and repair it.”

Shabalala said that the leaking pipe was repaired over the weekend ending July 28 and that backfilling had been completed at the site. She also broke down how long it ordinarily takes to complete backfilling requests.

This turning point may require a turning point marker towards becoming safer, especially in the evenings.

“For this one, backfilling was completed today, on July 29. The next step is for a job card to be issued to the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) for a reinstatement to be done.
“The turnaround time for backfilling is about five days after the repair work, to allow for the cement to dry and for the repairs to settle. However, these turnaround times are affected by various issues, including the magnitude of the work to be performed. It depends on the repair work that was done.”

JRA was contacted with an enquiry on July 30, specifically towards whether the agency intends to add any traffic-calming measures to demarcate a need to slow down for motorists using the slipway joining Empire Road to Sandton Drive.
