With temperatures dropping and the season’s chill settling in, communities are visibly coming together to ensure that their less fortunate members are not left out in the cold.

The Rotary Club Sandton delightedly reported their incredible announcement of having raised R85 000 through their annual blanket drive – an impressive leap from the previous year’s R31 000 raised.

The drive, which began at the start of May, has already seen an overwhelming response from residents, local businesses, and schools. Volunteers from the Rotary Club have been working tirelessly to collect, sort, and distribute blankets to various shelters and communities throughout Sandton and its surrounding areas.

“Our goal is to reach as many people as possible, and provide some relief from the cold,” said the president of Rotary Club Sandton, Dr Ntombi Mhangwani. “Every blanket donated makes a huge difference to someone facing the harsh realities of winter without adequate warmth. We are incredibly grateful for the generosity of our community.”

Rotary Club Sandton has been collecting blankets since May.

The initiative formed a part of the Rotary Club Sandton’s ongoing efforts to support and uplift members of vulnerable communities in and around Sandton. In addition to the blanket drive, the club also organised various other community service projects throughout the year, including food drives, educational programs, and river clean-ups.

The collective effort has not only brought in a substantial number of blankets but has also fostered a sense of community spirit and solidarity. Club volunteer co-ordinator Tinashe Nondo expressed over the club’s outreach campaigns.

“Seeing the community come together for this cause has been heartwarming. It reminds us that even small acts of kindness can have a big impact.”

The next phase of the project is to distribute the blankets to organisations and institutions that most need the care this winter.
