Tatami Judoka continue to make Bryanston proud

Bryanston based Judoka return from Bloem tourney with medals proving their valor.

Judoka from Tatami Judo Club were in fine form at the South African Judo Championships held in Bloemfontein from July 2–6.

The Hobart Centre-based club, training under the guidance of sensei Basil Smith, had 24 athletes representing the Johannesburg Judo District.

Of the 24 Tatami Judo judoka, 21 participants earned individual medals (nine gold, four silver, and nine bronze), as well as seven team medals across the judo and kata disciplines.

Judoka Luca Kyriacou, Ezekiel Jingose, Matthew Hunt, Kenneth Acquah, Andrew Coucourakis-Vermaak, Levi Da Silva, Teagan Lillico, Matthew Tooth, and Alexander Tanner were awarded gold medals, and were crowned SA Champions for 2024 in their age and weight categories.

“The Tatami Judo athletes excelled this year, with some superb performances and achievements on our national stage in applying the techniques practised and perfected over years of dedication and training,” said Smith. “Performing so well under pressure is also a testament to their fitness, discipline, and fortitude.”
