Bellowing smoke emites from a substation in Sandton

Emergency services have asked onlookers to keep a safe distance from the structure.

Gauteng Emergency Services (EMS) responded to a transformer fire incident call at 13:00 on July 17.

No injuries were sustained during the incident.

“The cause of the fire is not yet known. The fire is under control,” said Xolile Khumalo of Gauteng EMS.

There is a large amount of smoke rising from a substation on Katherine Street and Pretoria Avenue, Sandton.

Emergency services are on the scene. A Sandton Chronicle journalist was told by witnesses that the substation allegedly belongs to Eskom.

Emergency officials have asked motorists to use alternative routes and keep the area clear.

 

Johannesburg Emergency Management Services, Eskom, as well as City Power have been contacted for further comment. This is a developing story. More updates will be made as they become available.

Eskom has also reported a power outage affecting customers in Benmore Gardens, Dennehof, Morningside, Sandown, Simba, Strathavon, and Wierda Valley. The estimated time of restoration is not available at this stage.
