Sandton’s rising star on Olympic Hopes Team

At just 16, Matthew Wilson's dedication and talent have earned him a place on South Africa's Olympic Hopes team.

In an impressive feat of skill and dedication, Sandtonite Matthew Wilson (16) has secured a coveted spot to represent South Africa in the Olympic Hopes team.

The Olympic Hopes is a prestigious event designed for junior athletes, offering them a platform to showcase their talents internationally.

Matthew has demonstrated exceptional canoeing prowess, catching selectors’ attention with his remarkable performances in local and national competitions.

His journey has been characterised by relentless training, unwavering determination, and a passion for excellence.

“From a young age, I was drawn to physical activities, constantly looking for new challenges to push my limits. Growing up, I watched my dad launch into the ocean on his fishing ski during family holidays, sparking a deep-seated desire to explore the water myself.”

Matthew said with a smile that he has finally made it onto the selectors’ team sheet and into the Olympic Hopes team that will represent SA.

“I am truly honoured by the chance to represent my country in the Olympic Hopes Sprint Team. It is an opportunity of a lifetime, and I am thrilled to seize it. I owe a debt of appreciation to everyone who has supported me along this journey.”

He added that his training regimen leading up to the sprint races for the selection of the Olympic Hopes Team was incredibly demanding, pushing himself to his limits each day.

“I started intensive sessions last year in December, focusing initially on long-distance running and paddling to prepare for the rigorous 120km three-day Dusi Canoe Marathon. I also kept an eye on the upcoming sprint championships, ensuring a well-rounded preparation.”

Matthew elaborated that he aims to use his skills to the fullest and highlighted how canoeing enriches one’s life, as it is truly a rewarding sport.

“I would like to inspire others across South Africa to explore the sport and find the true reward in it.”

He pointed out that he has been fortunate to receive immense support, especially from his parents and his sports team at St David’s during his prep school years.

“I owe a great deal to my parents for their unwavering encouragement and for providing me with the opportunity to pursue my passion for canoeing. Their investment in my sport and ensuring proper nutrition has been invaluable.”
